Russia, the Crimea, and a helpless West

Credit: Wikimedia Commons
A visual of why Russia invaded the Crimea and why it will likely stand.

  • Crimea is largely an ethnic Russian majority.
  • The Crimea is the main Russian naval base on the Black Sea.
  • Also, the Crimea was historically part of Russia and it was only during the Soviet era that the Crimea was "given" to the Ukraine.

The region is relatively isolated from the rest of the world. There is little possibility of military intervention by anyone, including the US. Economic pressure by the rest of the world will yield little in the face of these strong Russian national interests.
