If ever there was a prime example of why it is so important to have freedom of speech and the apparent silliness of governments fighting it was demonstrated in a news article today. Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr was just sentenced to a year in jail and 90 lashes for acting in a movie that presented Iran in a bad light.Vafamehr has been in jail since July following her appearance in the movie "My Tehran for Sale."
I hope much noise will be generated about this internationally. It would be good if the noise made it to the point that the Iranian government will have to find some way to save face...such as letting her out on bail and "forgetting" to bring her back - like they did with the hikers recently released for allegedly illegally entering Iranian territory.
If the United States jailed every movie-maker and actor who made a movie that said something bad about the United States, our jails would double in size. We don't want to go there...neither should Iran.
